Movebank

Movebank is a free, online database of animal tracking data hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology. It is an international project with over 11,000 users, including people from research and conservation groups around the world. Animal tracking researchers can use it to manage, share, protect, analyze, and archive their data. For example, researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology track the movements of several bird species across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East and upload their results in Movebank. The scientists record and analyse the movements as well as update the routes on a daily basis. In addition, they archive historical data on movements of different species.

Over 2700 data managers store over 250 million animal locations describing the movements of over 500 species on Movebank. One of the co-founders of the project is Martin Wikelski of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, in cooperation with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, NASA, the US National Science Foundation, and the Max Planck Society.
